Tavern is unlocked through normal game play when a player reaches level 62.
Players can 'pay to play' Tavern from level 55 onward, where they can choose to pay with crystals (which will need to be bought with real money) to unlock the Picture early, rather than waiting until they reach level 62 and unlock it for free through normal game play. Each part requires 75 crystals, totaling 300 crystals.
"While Christy was sorting old books in the attic, she found one of Richard's magical photos. At once, Christy found me and said that the photo had vanished into thin air. In the past, such a phenomenon would have astounded me, but the wonderful world of Explorers has engulfed me so thoroughly that I now accept such cases as the norm. When the magical photo was found, I had a feeling that in just a few moments, the doors of the tavern would open and a loud crowd of young knights, musicians, singers and poets would come in."
Tavern is one of the 19 pictures in the game that does not reward any combining elements, but does reward collection items that require a large number of combining elements to combine.
- Chicken thighs
- Door Knocker
Morphs and Pieces modes have their own items that need to be found, separate from those listed above.
Resource Demands and Rewards for PlayingEdit
Tavern is a Collection Item only Picture. This means its list of potential rewards for each play only contains regular Collection Items, mode dependent Collection Items (depending on what mode the Picture is currently in), and Quest Items (if a Quest is currently active for the Picture). The list of potential rewards for Tavern is made up of 5 Collections added by the Tavern Update:
- Legendary swords
- Legendary shields
- Favorite heroines
- Favorite heroes
- Beautiful bracelets
- Elegant hats
When Tavern is first opened, and so is on Novice level, only the first 3 items from the Favorite heroines collection and the first item from the Megalopolises collection will be on the list of potential rewards. As the level of the Picture is increased, more and more items will be unlocked as potential rewards.
The amount of energy required to play Tavern will increase as the level of the Picture is increased. The experience points and coins rewards for each win of the Picture will also increase to match the increase in resource demands, as will the pool of potential collection item rewards:

Unlocking Tavern Level GlitchEdit
A glitch in the game that was introduced by the Tavern Update, and still exists in the most up-to-date version of the game (Spring 2015), causes the game to change the requirements to unlock certain pictures, including Tavern. This means that players must reach higher game levels than expected to unlock these pictures.
Originally, when a player started a new game they will see a locked padlock icon over all pictures except Venice and Buddha's Square. Tapping on this icon will bring up a screen that will explain what experience level a player must be on to unlock these pictures. Once the player approaches the stated level, the icon of the locked padlock will change to an icon of an unlocked padlock indicating that the picture is now unlocked. At that point, the player can choose to pay with crystals to unlock the picture early, rather than waiting until they reach the unlocking level.
Once the player reaches the stated unlocking level, a new quest will begin that will ask the player to search for pieces of the picture, and once these pieces are collected the player will be able to open the new picture after paying with energy points and coins and solving a jigsaw puzzle of the new picture.
This glitch causes the game level number stated at the beginning of the game to change to a higher number once the player reaches the original level. That is, the unlock early with crystals level (the 'pay to play' level) is listed for the picture as the 'unlocking level' when a player taps on the pictures icon on their home desktop. The information box that appears gives the 'pay to play' level and tells the player that the picture is locked and will unlock at that level. Once the player reaches that level, all that happens is the padlock icon changes from a locked padlock to an unlocked padlock. No quests to find the picture pieces will start, and when the players taps on the picture they will see the exact same message telling them that the picture is locked but with a new, higher, game level given as the 'unlocking' level, and the player will suddenly have the option to pay with crystals to open the picture early (these must be bought with real money).
For example, for the Tavern picture itself a new player will see that they must reach level 55 to unlock Tavern. However as soon as the players reaches level 55 the picture will not unlock and trigger the quest to open the picture. Instead the requirements to unlock Tavern will change to show level 62 instead of level 55. Once the player reaches level 62 the Tavern picture will unlock and they will be able to open it.
Originally, just Tavern and other new pictures had this problem (e.g. Treasure Island, Theater). But in response to complaints from users, the game developers made the situation worse by changing all pictures in the game to this system. In doing so they actually increased the level required to open all other pictures so that now they 'unlock' (and you can pay with crystals) at their original opening level, but you will not be able to open them without paying money for another 2 or more game levels.
The game never once explains the difference between the original 'unlocking' level it gives (the 'pay to play' level) and the sudden change to a new 'unlocking' level when a player reaches the original level (the 'real' opening level). It uses the same dialog in the information box for the picture in both instances, and the change does not happen until the player reaches the first level. This means players do not know what level they really have to reach to open any picture in the game until the reach the 'pay to play' level for that picture and the information box changes, revealing the new level.
