G5 games - the makers of The Secret Society: Hidden Mystery have released a number of updates to the game since first introducing it in November 2012

For the most part, the Secret Society - Hidden Mystery game is very stable, however from time to time an update is released that is unstable and results in players being locked out of the game. Usually, a new update is required to fix the problem, and in the mean time any player who has installed the faulty update will not be able to play. A solution is to downgrade the app to the previous version in order to regain access to the game.

Important: The Secret Society Wiki takes no responsibility for any problems encountered when downgrading your game version. Players who choose to downgrade, do so at their own risk and should be aware that they could lose their game progress if something goes wrong. It is recommended that players considering such methods read up on device specific information online before starting in order to be fully confident in what they are doing and how it will affect their device. There are many comprehensive guides online that are device specific and also many device support forums, where experts can offer trouble shooting solutions. The Secret Society Wiki cannot provide technical support for devices themselves, please defer to the experts for this.

Examples of Unstable Game Versions Edit

iOS Platform Edit

  • 17th April 2013: Version 1.3 of the game, which originally introduced the Friends aspect of the game, left a proportion of players unable to play due to game crashes. Players on the older 1.2 version of the game could still play. This was not fixed until the release of version 1.3.5 on the 30th April.
  • 15th August 2013: Version 1.4 of the game, which originally introduced the Ancient Library and Mill pictures, was originally stable. However, an change in iOS locked a large number of players out of their games until the release of Version 1.5 on the 2nd October 2013.
  • 13th December 2013: Version 1.7, the 2013 Christmas Update, locked a very large proportion of players out of the game. Players on the older 1.6 version of the game, and a small proportion of players in the new 1.7 version of the game could still play. This was not fixed until the release of version 1.7.5 on the 17th December 2013.
  • 10th September 2014: Version 1.10, the Treasure Island Update, was originally stable. However, an update to iOS caused the game to start crashing. Players without the iOS 8 update could still play, but anyone who had upgraded suffered crashing problems until the release of the 1.11 Update on the 11th October 2014.

Kindle Platform Edit

  • 11th July 2014: Version 1.9, the Tavern Update, locked the majority of players out of the game. Players on the older 1.8 version of the game could still play. This was not fixed until the release of version 1.9.5 on the 17th July 2014.

In most cases, downgrading to a previous version of the game would help solve problems while waiting for the patch to be released, but staying on the unstable game version resulted in either not being able to play (crashes on the splash screen) or severely impacted play (crashes on certain commands in the game).

Backing Up Your Old Game Versions iOS Mobile Devices (iPad, iPhone) Edit

It is beneficial to keep back ups of the old versions of the game itself as well as your own game progress. This way you can downgrade the game should you install an update that causes major problems for your game.

On your Desktop (before updating to latest version of game):

  1. Connect your device to iTunes. Choose back up, and when asked choose yes to 'transfer my purchases'. This will copy the current version of the game install file onto your computer.
  2. Go to the Apps window. This shows the current list of Apps connected to your iTunes account. Right clicking on the Secret Society App icon and selecting 'get info' will show the update version of the game currently on your computer. If there is a newer version of the game there will also be an update banner over the app icon. Right click on any app and select "show in windows explorer", this will bring you to where all install files for your apps are kept on your computer.
  3. Identify the current Secret Society install file, these will be roughly labelled the same as the version numbers shown on the Update page. For example, the current version of the game (version 1.12.5) filename is called "Secret Society 1.12.6.ipa", and the previous version of the game (version 1.12) filename is called "Secret Society 1.12.3.ipa".
  4. Make a copy of this version of the game file to a different folder on your computer. Since the different install files for the game contain the game version in their name, so you may keep multiple versions of the file corresponding to different updates. Keep a folder for these old versions of the game, e.g. Game Backups. Note: the game install files are big - up to 2Gb in size - so you may need to choose which versions to back up to save space.

Downgrading iOS Mobile Devices (iPad, iPhone)Edit

If, at a later date, you download a new update for the game that causes problems for your game/device, you can use one of your previously backed up versions of the game to downgrade the game to a more stable (but older) version of the game. This means you will not have the latest content that came with the new update, but will enable you to continue to play until a patch is released that fixes the problematic update.

Note: This process involves deleting your game. You will need a working backup of your game to restore your game progress after downgrading the game version. You will need a copy of the update version of the game you wish to install and access to iTunes on a computer for the downgrade.

iTunes App Downgrade using a PC Edit

With your Device connected to your Desktop:

  1. Back up your current game, either through Cloud or externally copy the game files to your computer using iFunBox (or equivalent file management software). It is also a good idea to connect your device to your computer and do a back up of the device in iTunes before starting. Press yes to transfer purchases if given the option (this will back up the apps, including the install file for the version of the game you currently use).

On your Desktop (device disconnected): Edit

  1. Open iTunes and go to the Apps window.
  3. Delete the latest version of the game file - in this case "Secret Society 1.12.6.ipa" from the folder, so that you can replace it with the version of the game you wish to install, e.g. "Secret Society 1.12.3.ipa" (the first Christmas Update).
  4. Restart iTunes.
  5. With the iTunes window open and on the Apps window - drag the version of the game you want to install (e.g. "Secret Society 1.12.3.ipa") from the directory you backed it up to into the iTunes window. If you see a message telling you that you already have an uptodate version of this app, click yes to replacing it. This will copy the old version of the game into iTunes (a copy of the Secret Society 1.12.3.ipa file will automatically be placed in the iTunes folder you deleted the Secret Society 1.12.6.ipa file from). Right click on the Secret Society icon and select 'get info' to confirm it is now the older version of the game.

On your Device (disconnected):

  1. With the device disconnected from the computer, delete the Secret Society game from the device holding down on the icon until it starts to wobble and an x appears in the corner. (Choose yes if asked to preserve game centre information during delete.)

With your Device connected to your Desktop: Edit

  1. Connect you device and in iTunes go to the devices menu. It is okay if your device automatically syncs and transfers your purchases as you deleted the newer version of the game before connecting, but if it does not do this automatically you can wait until the old version is installed before syncing.
  2. In the app window for the device (not the over all iTunes app window used earlier), scroll through the list of apps on the LHS - this list contains all the apps not currently on the device but in iTunes. Find the Secret Society game in this list and press install. A game icon for the game will appear on the device preview pages on the RHS of the window.
  3. Pressing sync will install the version of the game currently in your iTunes folders (in this case Secret Society 1.12.3.ipa, which is the first Christmas Update, version 1.12 of the game).

On your Device (disconnected): Edit

  1. Restart your device before opening the app for the first time.
  2. Open the game, and when the game tutorial asks you to type in a player name type in the name you used before. This should bring up a message saying 'You have played before, do you want to restore your progress'. Select yes, and your game progress will be restored.
  3. If you do not see this message, then exit the game and reconnect your device to your computer. You can restore your game progress either through iTunes (doing a cloud restore of the device) or by using your manual backup from iFunbox. See the backing up page for details on backing up and restoring your game progress.
  4. You will now be playing the older version of the game. Turn off automatic updates if you do not want your device to update to the latest version again (on the device go to settings - iTunes & App Store - and un-toggle Updates in the Automatic Downloads section).

iTunes App Downgrade using a Mac Edit

Coming soon, but very similar to PC version. In iTunes, right click on any app and select "show in folder" to see where apps are stored on your computer. From there delete the Secret Society app version you wish to downgrade, then continue following the PC steps above to do the install of the older version. The same install files (below) will work both on Mac and PC versions of iTunes.
